Juglans cinerea, commonly known as Butternut or White Walnut, is a species of walnut native to the eastern U.S. and southeast Canada. This specimen is located along the Delaware River in New York. The property and house was established in the year 1830. Although not for certain, we can assume that the tree was planted at the time the house was built, making this Butternut close to 200 years old. The most serious disease to J. cinerea is butternut decline or butternut canker. Butternut canker first appeared in the US in the early 20th century as part of an imported nursery stock of Japanese walnut. After some inspecting of this tree, there appears to be no cankers for now.
