General Grant

Scientific Name: Sequoiadendron giganteum

In early February of 2022 I was able to photograph the the General Grant tree located in the Grant Grove of Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park.  On the long steep and winding drive up the mountain fog started to set in. Something I was more familiar in the coastal Redwood Forests.  There would be moment where the fog was so thick you couldn’t even see the trees.   The General Grant tree is recognized as the 2nd Giant Sequoia in the world.  The tree was named in 1867 after Ulysses S. Grant, Union Army general and the 18th President of the United States (1869–1877). President Calvin Coolidge called it the "Nation's Christmas Tree" on April 28, 1926.
