Grant Knoll Sycamore

Scientific Name: Platanus occidentalis

Common Name: American Sycamore
Scientific Name: Platanus occidentalis
Location: Lancaster, Pennsylvania

Circumference: 300”
Height: 70’

The Grant Knoll Sycamore is estimated to be in the 300-350 year range, taking it back to a time when Pennsylvania was just a colony named Penn’s Woods. The Grant Knoll Tree, planted on the South West corner of the house is named after the farmer that originally owned the home and was known to be the largest tree in Pennsylvania in the 1920’s. The current owners of the property, AKA Worldwide are taking great care of the tree and allow access to the public. In 1957 the tree was struck by lighting giving it the appearance you see now. Miraculously the tree has continued to grow. The original farmer had arranged two telephone poles under the limbs for support and over the years the weight of the tree limbs have slowly driven them into the ground.
