Herbie the Elm
Scientific Name: Ulmus americana
Common Name: American Elm
Scientific Name: Ulmus americana
Location: Yarmouth, Maine
The historic elm tree, nicknamed “Herbie” succumbed to Dutch elm disease in 2010. Estimated to have been 240 years old, with a 20-foot circumference, a 93-foot crown spread, and standing at 110 feet, Herbie was known to be the oldest and tallest elm tree in New England. Prior to the tree coming down, the Elm Research Institute worked with Frank Knight who was Herbie’s caretaker and the tree warden of Yarmouth, to collect cuttings to uphold the trees’ legacy with clones.
