The Creek Council Oak tree is a historical monument, marking a traditional ceremonial ground chosen by the Lochapoka of the Creek Nation. In 1834, the Creeks were forced to leave their homeland by the U.S. Government. They began their involuntary migration from Alabama to the land of the Mississippi river where the U.S. government designated them land which was known as "Indian Territory." In 1836, after the Lochapokas arrived, they chose a large oak tree, overlooking the river and on top of a hill to have their first Council. These areas continued to be gathering places for tribal ceremonies and celebrations.
