The Stagg tree is recognized as the 5th largest tree in the world. The tree was saved by firefighters in the 2020 Castle fire that destroyed the surrounding area of Alder Creek. In 2019 Save the Redwoods League announced that would purchase the tree from the Rouch family for the amount of $15.6 million USD. The plan to do extensive restoration to the area and once completed, turn the tree over to the US Forest Service.
